DESCRIPTION:In the era of precision agriculture\, the ability to effectivel
y manage and analyze spatial data is crucial for ensuring sustainable farm
ing practices and optimizing crop yields.\nThis presentation will delve in
to the innovative use of Open Source technologies\, specifically PostgreSQ
L with PostGIS and GeoServer\, within the Spatial Yield Program in Bayer C
rop Science's global field trials.\n\nThe primary objective of this projec
t was to establish a robust data pipeline that facilitates the rapid deliv
ery of critical information to end-users. This data is essential for asses
sing the quality and performance of various corn and soybean varieties\, e
nabling agronomists and farmers to make informed decisions based on real-t
ime insights. \nBy leveraging PostgreSQL and PostGIS\, we harnessed the po
wer of spatial databases \nto efficiently store\, manage\, and query large
datasets exceeding 1TB of high-precision data collected by planters and c
ombines. Meanwhile\, GeoServer enabled seamless integration and visualizat
ion of this data through web services\, serving up to 75 million requests
per day internally. \n\nOne of the significant technical challenges we fac
ed was the need to ensure that the data delivery process was not only swif
t but also reliable\, allowing users to access and analyze data without de
lay.Our solution involved the development of a streamlined pipeline that a
utomates data processing and integrates multiple data sources\, ensuring t
hat users receive timely updates on crop performance metrics.\n\nThis pres
entation will highlight the methodologies including AWS services\, Apache
Kafka and K8S crons employed in the project\, the challenges encountered\,
and the solutions implemented. \nWe will also discuss the impact of our w
ork on the decision-making processes within the agricultural sector and ho
w Open Source technologies can empower organizations to harness the full p
otential of spatial data. \nThe primary objective of the program is to ass
ist growers in identifying the best products for their farms by rigorously
testing products across diverse environments to determine the most effect
ive solutions tailored to each specific context\, as well as the managemen
t practices that yield optimal results.
