DESCRIPTION:The FAO’s WaPOR database provides open-access data on evapotr
anspiration\, biomass production\, and water productivity\, supporting sus
tainable water management in agriculture. However\, its spatial resolution
varies across levels: Level 3 data (20 m) is available only for selected
 irrigation schemes\, while Level 1 (300 m) and Level 2 (100 m) cover broad
er regions but lack the detail needed for localized analysis. This limitat
ion makes it challenging to assess water use at the field scale\, particul
arly in areas where high-resolution data is not available.\nIn this presen
tation\, we would like to demonstrate how QGIS can facilitate the downscal
ing of WaPOR data using machine learning techniques with high-resolution a
uxiliary datasets. By enhancing the spatial resolution of WaPOR data estim
ates\, this approach provides a more detailed and accurate representation
of water use across diverse landscapes. This capability is crucial for gai
ning a better overview of agricultural water consumption and improving irr
igation management in regions beyond the predefined Level 3 coverage.\nWe
also present our roadmap for integrating this downscaling methodology into
WAPlugin\, making it a user-friendly and reproducible tool within QGIS. B
 y combining open-source GIS and data-driven techniques\, this initiative s
trengthens the accessibility and usability of WaPOR data for researchers\,
water managers\, and policymakers. Attendees will gain insights into the
technical workflow\, practical applications\, and future development of WA
 Plugin’s new features.
