DESCRIPTION:The ESA EarthCODE platform (https://earthcode.esa.int/) is revo
lutionizing Earth System Science with Open Science principles. \n\nThe pla
tform is a dynamic Collaborative Open Development Environment created to t
ransform Earth System Science by embedding FAIR and Open Science Principle
s into the scientific development process. By providing tools\, expertise\
, and opportunities\, EarthCODE enables science teams to seamlessly adopt
open science practices as part of their workflows. With seamless access to
commercial platform services and a wealth of community resources and tool
s\, EarthCODE empowers scientists to collaborate\, innovate\, and adhere t
o open research practices\, driving the next wave of discovery in Earth Sc
ience. \n\nSummary: \nThis hands-on workshop is designed to introduce part
icipants to EarthCODE's capabilities\, guiding them from searching\, findi
ng\, and accessing EO datasets and workflows to publishing reproducible ex
periments that can be shared with the wider scientific community. This wor
kshop will equip you with the tools and knowledge to leverage EarthCODE fo
r your own projects and contribute to the future of open science. \n\nDuri
 ng this 4-hour workshop\, participants will\, in a hands-on fashion\, lear
n about: \n\n- Introduction to EarthCODE and the future of FAIR and Open S
cience in Earth Observation \n- Gain understanding in Finding\, Accessing\
, Interoperability\, and Reusability of data and workflows on EarthCODE \n
 - Creating reproducible experiments using EarthCODE’s platforms - with a
hands-on example with Euro Data Cube and Pangeo \n- Publishing data and e
xperiments to EarthCODE \n\nAt the end of the workshop\, we will take time
for discussion and feedback on how to make EarthCODE better for the commu
nity. \n\nWorkshop Overview: \n1. Introduction to EarthCODE and the Futur
e of FAIR and Open Science in Earth Observation \n\nThe workshop begins wi
th an introduction to the EarthCODE platform and its role in promoting FAI
R principles within the EO community. This section will address the challe
nges of working with EO data at scale and how EarthCODE provides a robust
infrastructure for data discovery\, processing\, and sharing. Participants
will gain insight into the importance of reproducibility in EO research a
nd the ways open science practices are shaping the future of the field. \n
\nTopics covered: \n\n- Overview of EarthCODE’s mission and architecture
\n- Overview of EarthCODE platforms (at present including Euro Data Cube\
, DeepESDL and Copernicus/OpenEO) \n- The importance of FAIR principles in
EO data \n- Challenges in EO data management and reproducibility \n\n\n2.
  Finding\, Accessing\, Interoperability\, and Re-Use of Data and Reproduci
ble Workflows on EarthCODE \n\nThis section goes through navigating the Ea
rthCODE Science Catalog. Participants will be guided through methods for e
fficiently finding and accessing a diverse range of EO research datasets a
nd workflows. The session will highlight the practical application of STAC
/OGC metadata standards. \n\nHands-on activities: \n- Finding and accessin
g datasets on EarthCODE Science Catalog \n- Understanding STAC/OGC API Rec
ords metadata standards \n- Re-running experiments and adapting pre-existi
ng workflows to new datasets and research objectives using EarthCODE's cro
ss-platform capabilities \n\n3. Creating FAIR Data and Workflows Using Ear
thCODE’s Platforms – Hands-On with EDC and Pangeo \n\nEarthCODE’s ke
y strengths are its cross-platform capabilities and integration with platf
orms such as Euro Data Cube (EDC) and Pangeo. This session will focus on c
reating and publishing an experiment on EarthCODE\, including workflow and
data\, from start to finish. Participants will work with real-world datas
ets\, apply processing workflows\, and learn how to share their results. \
n\nWe will introduce the Pangeo ecosystem (http://pangeo.io/) and EDC (htt
ps://eurodatacube.com/)\, demonstrating the core concepts of open\, reprod
ucible\, and scalable Earth science. Participants will explore hands-on ta
sks\, including: \n\n- Accessing data using Pangeo on EDC \n- Loading and
analysing data with Xarray \n- Visualizing data with HvPlot \n- Understand
ing how to scale analysis with Dask \n\nExample datasets will include Cope
rnicus Sentinel satellite data\, as well as products from the Atmosphere M
onitoring and Climate Change Services. All Python packages used during the
training are open-source to ensure accessibility and reusability for all
participants. \n\nHands-on activities: \n- Setting up an EDC Pangeo enviro
nment \n- Introduction to Pangeo \n- Using Pangeo for scalable data proces
sing \n\n4. Publishing Data and Experiments to EarthCODE \n\nThis section
will follow-up on the developed workflows/data from the last session\, par
ticipants will learn how to publish their experiments and datasets to Eart
hCODE\, making them available for other researchers. We will cover best pr
actices and guidelines for FAIR and Open-Science and common tools to help
you generate metadata. \n\nHands-on activities: \n\n- Preparing an experim
ent for publication to EarthCODE and data formats \n- FAIR and Open-Scienc
e Guidelines for EarthCODE \n- Using stactools and validation tools to cre
ate metadata \n- Publishing datasets and workflows to EarthCODE’s reposi
tory\n\n5. Discussion and Feedback: Making EarthCODE Better for the Commun
ity \n\nThe final session is an open discussion where participants can sha
re feedback about EarthCODE \, including improvements and new features. Th
is is an opportunity to help shape the future of EarthCODE.
