DESCRIPTION:Accurate prediction of land use and land cover (LULC) is essent
ial for effective\nconservation\, sustainable development planning\, and m
anaging competing user\ndemands. This study employs an ANN-Cellular Automa
tion model to simulate and\npredict future LULC maps in Chitwan District\,
Nepal. Three spatial variables\, namely\nDEM\, distance from road and riv
er\, and aspect play a significant role in predicting the\nLULC map of the
area. The model achieves a high accuracy level\, with a Kappa value\nof 0
.95636 indicating a strong agreement between observed and predicted 2020 L
ULC\nmaps. By utilizing the 2010 and 2015 LULC maps in combination with th
e same spatial\nvariables\, the study projects the LULC maps for 2020 and
2030. The results reveal that\ndue to anthropogenic pressures\, there will
be a conversion of forest land and other\ncategories into built-up and cr
opland areas. The study also identifies dynamic changes\nin land use and l
and cover patterns within Chitwan District. The area of water bodies\ninit
ially decreased from 76.88 sq. km in 2010 to 72.14 sq. km in 2015 but unde
rwent a\nsignificant expansion to 99.81 sq. km in 2020 and further to 106.
39 sq. km in 2030.\nForest area exhibits a minor reduction from 1506.14 sq
. km in 2010 to 1528.78 sq. km\nin 2020\, followed by a small increase to
 1539.53 sq. km in 2030. Built-up areas witness\na steady increase from 3.9
0 sq. km in 2010 to 14.69 sq. km in 2020 and further growth\nto 18.86 sq.
km in 2030. The agricultural area shows a decline from 597.05 sq. km in\n2
010 to 519.36 sq. km in 2020\, continuing the slight decline to 511.62 sq.
km in 2030.\nThe study also observes an increase in the area of other woo
ded land from 35.99 sq. km\nin 2010 to 57.34 sq. km in 2020\, but a subseq
uent decrease to 43.58 sq. km in 2030.\nAdditionally\, the analysis of lan
 d surface temperature (LST) maps in December for\n2010\, 2015\, and 2020 r
eveals distinct patterns\, with settlement areas consistently\ndisplaying
higher temperatures than forest areas. These findings highlight the impact
of\nland cover on local microclimates\, potentially leading to increased
urban heat island\neffects in settlements. The study underscores the signi
ficance of considering land use\nand land cover changes when managing urba
n and forest environments in Chitwan\nDistrict\, Nepal.\n\nKeywords: Land
