DESCRIPTION:The State of California has a recurring issue of devastating wi
 ldfires that spread out of control\, causing significant damage to the wel
 lbeing of its citizens\, its environment and economy.\n\nDue to this recur
 ring issue\, the State of California and the USDA—United States Forest S
 ervice committed to applying treatments to one million acres of land (roug
 hly 400\,000 hectares)\, with the goal of reducing the occurrence and seve
 rity of these wildfires. Planscape was created as a tool to prioritize and
  guide this one million-acre effort.\n\nPlanscape is a freely available to
 ol built to help landscape planners\, public agents and the general public
  prioritize and learn about landscape interventions that can minimize fire
  risk and cost while maximizing ecological benefits. \n\nPlanscape uses li
 near optimization algorithms and over 200 datasets produced by the Califor
 nia Wildfire & Forest Resilience Task Force to determine the priority loca
 tions for applying landscape treatments such as mastication\, prescribed b
 urns\, and others.\n\nThis talk aims to outline why and how Planscape is b
 eing built by Spatial Informatics Group\, with an in-depth description of 
 the technologies in use\, software architecture\, data handling (pre-proce
 ssing\, usage\, post-processing)\, and an overview of our current goals an
 d challenges.\n\nUltimately\, we will demonstrate how government agencies 
 can leverage Planscape to implement similar optimizations in your communit
 y\, county\, state\, or country.
