DESCRIPTION:The State of California has a recurring issue of devastating wi
ldfires that spread out of control\, causing significant damage to the wel
l-being of its citizens\, environment\, and economy.\n\nDue to this recurr
ing issue\, the State of California and the USDA—United States Forest Se
rvice committed to treating one million acres of land (roughly 400\,000 he
ctares) to reduce the occurrence and severity of these wildfires. Planscap
e was created to prioritize and guide this one million-acre effort.\n\nPla
nscape is a freely available tool built to help landscape planners\, publi
c agents and the general public prioritize and learn about landscape inter
ventions that minimize fire risk and cost while maximizing ecological bene
fits. \n\nPlanscape utilizes zonal statistics data gathered from over 200
raster layers\, applying Linear Programming techniques to determine the be
st locations for planners to intervene in the landscape by performing trea
 tments such as mastication\, prescribed burns\, etc.\n\nThis hands-on sess
ion will discuss several options for obtaining Zonal Statistics for Plansc
ape. In this benchmark\, we can compare a diverse range of technologies an
d techniques utilized to reduce the necessary time to obtain zonal statist
ics for roughly 24 million regular polygons covering the state of Californ
ia and\, over 200 million zonal statistics records.\n\nThis talk benchmark
s the following methods: PostGIS + PostgreSQL\, Python RasterIO\, rasterst
 ats\, custom code.

near optimization algorithms and over 200 datasets produced by the Califor
nia Wildfire & Forest Resilience Task Force to determine the priority loca
tions for applying landscape treatments such as mastication\, prescribed b

eing built by Spatial Informatics Group\, with an in-depth description of
the technologies in use\, software architecture\, data handling (pre-proce
ssing\, usage\, post-processing)\, and an overview of our current goals an
d challenges.\n\nUltimately\, we will demonstrate how government agencies
can leverage Planscape to implement similar optimizations in your communit
 y\, county\, state\, or country.
