DESCRIPTION:RapiD is an advanced Open Source map editor for OpenStreetMap b
uilt by the MapWithAI team at Meta. RapiD makes it simple to work with op
enly licensed geodata and AI-detected road\, building\, and landform featu
res. \n\nFor years the RapiD editor was based on a SVG rendering engine b
uilt with D3.js. As our users map the world in increasing levels of detai
l\, and as more open data sources become available\, our rendering tech ha
s struggled to keep up with the massive amounts of data that we’re askin
g it to display in a browser-based JavaScript application.\n\nOur team rec
ently converted this legacy rendering engine to instead use WebGL technolo
gy by leveraging the popular Open Source PixiJS game engine. The conversi
on from SVG to WebGL yielded a considerable performance boost\, and the ne
w WebGL-based renderer is up to the task of working with massive world-sca
le datasets and handling the increasing data density of OpenStreetMap.\n\n
In this talk we share our progress on bringing new datasets into RapiD\, t
ell the story of how we built a modern map editor on top of an Open Source
game engine\, and share our roadmap for the future of mapping.
