DESCRIPTION:Today Protected Areas only partly cover important sites for bio
diversity and are not yet fully ecologically representative and effectivel
y or equitably managed. Improvement of the existing networks and further e
xpansion of conservation areas will therefore require well-defined baselin
es that are comparable across countries for actions prioritisation.\n In
recent years the availability of new earth observation imagery and advanc
es in analysis and processing have significantly improved our capabilities
in terms of mapping and monitoring biodiversity variables and ecosyst
em services. This event will introduce the Biodiversity Analyst\, a
web GIS tool\, developed by the European Commission - Joint Research Centr
e\, for identifying areas of potentially high conservation value based
on the available datasets such as species distribution\, ecosystems servi
ces and natural state.\nThe aim of the Biodiversity Analyst is to provide
decision-makers with means to visualise and interact with the above datase
ts which are considered key for biodiversity conservation while allowing t
hem at the same time to test different weighting schemes in terms of prior
itisation to identify so-called "biodiversity hot-spots".

DESCRIPTION:The Africa Knowledge Platform is a one-stop-shop for the Europe
an Commission (EC)’s scientific knowledge on Africa. Developed by the Jo
int Research Centre\, this open\, visual\, and interactive platform brings
together a wealth of geospatial scientific information on Africa’s soci
al\, economic\, territorial and environmental development. The Africa Know
ledge Platform is developed using open-source geospatial technologies and
the whole platform is open to the public\, so that its potential value ext
ends to academia and to stakeholders from the public\, private and non-pro
fit sectors in both Europe and Africa. The platform brings together inform
ation across 62 topics within 10 broad themes: natural resources\, sustain
able growth and jobs\, food and agriculture\, climate change\, human demog
 raphy\, health\, security\, economy\, energy and digital transformation. T
his covers all 17 of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals. We
will be taking a tour and in-depth look at the workflow used to develop an
d publish the platform and the technologies behind it.
