DESCRIPTION:UN Maps is a program led by the United Nations Department of Op
erational Support in support of several peacekeeping and political mission
 s such as UNSOS\, MONUSCO\, MINUSCA\, MINUSMA and UNISFA.\nBy leveraging i
nternal and crowdsourcing capabilities\, UN Maps aims not only to enrich t
opographic and operational data in UN mission areas but also to provide pe
acekeeping and humanitarian actors with topographic maps\, operational geo
-information\, search and navigation tools\, and imagery and street-level
base maps\, leveraging OpenStreetMap\, the Wikipedia of maps.\nIn order to
achieve its goals\, the UN Maps Initiative is building a thriving communi
ty around the collection\, validation\, usage\, and dissemination of open
geospatial data. This community is called UN Mappers.\nIt benefits from th
e established crowdsourcing activities\, such as mapathons\, training oppo
rtunities and other collaborative events involving several stakeholders as
the UN staff on the field (peacekeeping and agencies\, funds and programs
)\, academia (high schools and universities in Africa\, EU and US)\, local
communities and remote volunteers.\nTogether\, the UN Mappers community g
ive substantial support not only in the production of maps and web service
s but also in the development of innovative applications using virtual rea
lity and data analytics. Some of the results obtained with open data to th
ese applications will be presented during the intervention.\nFurthermore U
N Mappers are working on translating and updating OSM documentation materi
al in all 6 UN official languages\, which is distributed with open license
 .
