DESCRIPTION:No elevation data exists of Molokini Crater\, an island off the
  coast of Maui that gets 300\,000 visitors annually. To make my own\, I cr
 eated a photogrammetric model using a ten year old YouTube video fed into 
 an open source photogrammetry package. I exported the resulting mesh as a 
 point cloud and filtered it using opensource LiDAR program CloudCompare an
 d exported it as a raster. I then georeferenced the raster and scaled the 
 model vertically with QGIS. The National Geodetic Survey reports that my m
 odel\, down sampled to 1m resolution and made with OSS\, is the most compr
 ehensive survey of Molokini Crater in existence\, and it was done in less 
 than a day with a zero dollar budget. Photogrammetry is how Google Maps pr
 oduces it's 3D function and it's an old technique but a proliferation of t
 ourist and drone videos could open up new avenues for creating maps of sma
 ll extents. This process is easily automated and it's only a matter of tim
 e before photogrammetry software is capable of integrating images from dif
 ferent times of day which massively increases the amount of usable media f
 or modeling. This could be the beginning of internet-archived archaeology 
 where environments captured as video can be reconstructed and viewed in a 
 new way.
